Summer is here and the weather is beginning to warm-up. If you are participating in an outdoor sport – or even an indoor sport – it is extremely important to make sure you are staying hydrated.IMG_3124

Your body depends on water to survive and thrive. Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work correctly and efficiently. For example, your body uses water to maintain its’ temperature, remove waste and keep your joints lubricated. Without water the body is lacking a vital source of survival and function. Additionally, drinking enough water also helps to keep your skin clear and prevents your skin from breaking out.

IMG_3123When hydrating your body, skip the carbonated beverages. Hydration is not something you are going to achieve from carbonated sodas, pop, sports drinks.  Many carbonated beverages also contain sodium, which will make you become even thirstier. Caffeinated drinks won’t help with hydration either – they actually lead to dehydration. Caffeine has diuretic properties, thus causing you to go to the bathroom more often.

Best advice I can give is to drink water before, during and after your workout. For an added nutritional boost of vitamins and flavor, you can add fruit to your water. The best part of adding fruit to your water is that you is can eat it once you have drank the water. The most popular fruits to add to water are lemons, limes, blueberries, oranges, raspberries, strawberries or a combination of any of these. Some people also like using cucumbers in their water.
